What is white gold?

Gold is a pure element that is yellow and soft when mined.  This lack of hardness can be a disadvantage in jewelry, so it is mixed with other metals.  To make white gold, an alloy of nickel is added to the gold.  White gold is very popular because it cost is a fraction of platinum and much stronger than silver.
