What is the May birthstone?

Emerald, the May birthstone, occurs in light to dark shades of yellowish green to green bluish.  Inclusions are acceptable in emeralds and stones of intense green color with little or no inclusions can command very high prices.  The earliest recorded mines were located in ancient Greece, but today Colombia and Zambia are major sources for emeralds. The tradition of cutting emeralds with a step cut provides protection against knocks.
